Kamakura Museum Tour

Tour of the Kamakura Museum of National Treasures and the Kamakura-bori (Kamakura-style lacquerware) Museum, Shojin-ryori (Buddhist vegan cuisine) lunch served on Kamakura-bori ware, and visit to a Kamakura-bori studio.

Distinct from the culture of Kyoto and Nara led by royalty and nobles, the simple and robust Kamakura culture was formed at a unique time in Japanese history where the spirit of the samurai warriors was cultivated under shogunate governance. Most representative in the spirit of Zen, the Buddhist sect that flourished in Kamakura brought skilled master craftsmen from all over the country to create Buddhist statues and images. Many of those that remain are displayed at the Kamakura Kokuhoukan ("Museum of National Treasures") and explain the roots of Kamakura-bori lacquerware.

We offer participants of this event a one-of-a-kind rare opportunity to learn about the treasures and crafts of Kamakura and their history through a lecture given by the curators of the museums.

After visiting the two museums, participants will enjoy a traditional Buddhist "shojin-ryori" vegan cuisine lunch served on exquisite Kamakura-bori lacquerware dishes, and take a one-time only tour of a Kamakura-bori artisan’s private studio.

English interpretation will be provided throughout the event.
